Volunteer of the Month

The original foundation for Lean On Me is its one on one Peer Support Program.  Newly diagnosed patients are matched  with trained volunteers from an individual physician’s practice.  The breast cancer survivors, who have faced similar issues, remain available to the patient via telephone or email throughout every step of the experience.

Lean On Me recognizes the heart and soul of this organization is the women who give of their time and energy to provide support to others.  As a gesture of appreciation, Lean On Me “spotlights” one of these special volunteers each month.  This month we are thankful for Barbara E.

It started when I was in my late 20's--a routine gynecology check-up sent me to Dr.De Risi when he had just started his practice. I was fine, but I saved his card for 30 years knowing in my heart I would one day need him. After an annual mammogram in April 2003, my worst fears became reality (I lost my Mother to breast cancer in '87).I thought that after my lumpectomy all of the cancer would have been removed. I went into a surreal state of shock as my husband Charlie and I sat and heard the words from Dr.De Risi that I needed a double mastectomy to save my life. I did not cry much as I knew I had a wonderful husband and daughter by my side, and a Doctor with superior knowledge and a heart and hands of gold. I knew I was not alone in this battle.

51/2 years later, I have moved on. I am blessed with 2 beautiful grandchildren, I adore and live for my dogs, and I love taking care of my husband and home. I am also SO very proud to be a part of Lean On Me and to be able to help others who are so afraid to walk this walk. No one is alone! And of course I am thankful for the good fortune to have the many new "sisters"(and brothers--Gerry) I have in my life.  Although this has been an emotional roller coaster, it has also been an incredible learning experience for me. Life is beautiful!! And we are all strong!!! G-d Bless all.
